Exercise in modal verbs by Riya

He had to kill
her. But he couldn’t. She was too young and tender. And he couldn’t refuse
because he had already taken money. He came to the greenhouse, where she was,
and knelt down to her. He daren’t look at her proud bearing, he looked at brown
ground and whispered:
‘Forgive me, my
love, I must do it. God knows, how I don’t want it but I must. I know I’ll have
to do it and I’ll be hating myself for all my life. You shouldn’t have appeared
now, in holydays, when there are so many people here and when I need to pay my
mortgage. But it may be better that you have to die in prime of your life,
before you’re getting decrepit and ugly. Forgive me and good-bye.’
He took up a
knife and cut the stalk of the beautiful rose of the world.
